Hölderlin’s Echo
An experimental documentary film by Susanne Marschall and Hannes Rall
Fueled by a thirst for freedom and a rebellion against aesthetic constraints, animation and music intertwine in an ode to the ephemeral, the disruptive, and the multiplicity of meanings found in the depths of Hölderlin’s words.
Friedrich Hölderlin’s (1770-1843) profound verses continue to resonate across centuries, their power undimmed by time. Renowned composers have been drawn to the poet’s rich tapestry of words, weaving them into musical masterpieces. Singers worldwide continue to perform these German Kunstlieder (art songs), their voices preserving the memory of Hölderlin’s texts and their tumultuous history.
The film “Hölderlin’s Echo” features as its guiding voices Yue Wang, Ilker Arcayürek, Victoire Bunel, the virtuoso lieder duo Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll, and composer Wolfgang Rihm. It also features deeply moving Hölderlin songs written by Jewish composers Viktor Ullmann and Gideon Klein in the Theresienstadt concentration camp.
Animation sequences, crafted by an international team, complement the film’s narrative, offering a stylistically unrestrained exploration of the restless, passionate, ever-evolving, multifaceted poet and his tumultuous life.
